The Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) is a reliable measure of mortality risk in patients with end-stage liver disease. It is used as a disease severity index to help prioritize allocation of organs for transplant. This if for patients > 12 years of age. Consider newer MELD scores (MELD-NA) for transplant.

The MELD score predicts 3 month mortality with worsening with increasing score. A score of =< 9 is estimated to have a mortality (death rate) of 1.9% at 3 months while a score of >= 40 has a mortality of 71.3%.
